How many lives you lost? Are you a cat instead of a kiwi?

We have the kiwi-cat
We have the catfish

and we have the Highlanders in semis. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Yep, the Highlanders have done their job. Now it's up to the other Kiwi teams to perform a clean sweep.

Main hope now is that the Highlanders don't have to travel to South Africa for the semi. I think the only situation that happens is if we get Sharks/Lions/Stormers or Hurricanes/Lions/Chiefs or Hurricanes/Crusaders/Stormers.

Which is half of the combos. Come on clean sweep!

What a performance by the Canes!

Weather looked atrocious haha. Perenara/Barrett/Marshall = on point.

Hope Coles injury isn't too bad.

Barrett's kicking today was outstanding.... just as Perenara's running. Impressive stuff.

This is insane. The Chiefs have got to travel to SA for the match against the Stormers and now back to NZ for the match against the Hurricanes. Whereas the Highalanders need to do the opposite and travel from NZ to SA...

Can't both teams choose to remain in the country where they are currently and the Chiefs play the Lions and Hur vs Landers?

Would it not make more sense to have the playoffs played during three weeks in the same country? No, it would not but ffs...

It would be funny if the Lions defeat tht Highlanders and so the Chiefs against the Hurricanes... wouldn't it? Back to SA!!!

Unfortunate for everyone the crusaders started so poorly and never caught up. Would've saved a bit of travel in the long run

Oh well, it's looking very possible that the Highlanders will need to win three games on the road to take out the competition.

I don't really know how to eliminate the travelling in the playoffs. It was a thing back in the Super 12 era (though less extreme because there were only two rounds). Only option would be to adopt a more American style and have the first 2 rounds of the playoffs be solely between teams of the same conference and guarantee a Australia/NZ vs South Africa/Misc final. Not an option I prefer, at least this system tries to get the two best teams into the final.

Pretty harsh for a team to travel to Aussie, SA and then back to NZ as the Highlanders would have to but IMO it's a great incentive to finish the regular season on top so you can be at home like the Canes.

Yeah true, Highlanders can look back at the games against the Blues, Reds, Sharks, and Hurricanes. Games they lost by 7 points or less -- and against not particularly good opposition (Hurricanes excepted). Just win one of those and they would have been top of the table.

Re: Super Rugby 2016

Post by tryasta on Sun Jul 24, 2016 7:13 pm

For the past hours I have not been able to shake this from my head:

The last time 3 Kiwi teams and a SA side fought out the semifinals was in 2009. The Bulls, the canes, the chiefs and the crusaders qualified for the playoffs.

It was the year of Spies, Habana, du Preez, Matfield for the Bulls.

Lauaki, Massaga, Leonard, Kahui for the Chiefs.

At the canes So'oialo started to have neck problems but Smith and Nonu were already a consolidated duo and Coles bid his time behind Hore.

The Crusaders were without DC and McCaw (sabbatical and injury) and the likes of Slade, Ross, Jared Payne and Ellis stumbled their way into the playoffs.

We had three teams and we did not win it. The Bulls survived the Crusaders in the SF and then went on to demolish the Chiefs in an infamous match.

The Bulls at Loftus Versfeld were "unbeatebulls" and topped the ladder, which was a massive advantage. Whereas the Lions have not done so, we are facing the very real possibility that the Canes lose to the Chiefs and a travel weary Highlanders side lose to the Lions, which would mean the Chiefs need to cross the Ocean thrice in three weeks to face the Lions at Ellis Park at 1800m.

I can only hope for a Canes win to avoid that possibility.

So, Wellington will host the Super Rugby final for the second year in a row. Now we just need to find out their opponents. C'mon Highlanders!

The Highlanders had one chance to get back into the game...and Elliot Dixon proceeded to drop the ball cold in goal Mad

I imagine we could have had a very different game if they managed to score that try. Don't even understand what happened there, Dixon just flat out dropped it, utter brain fart.

Fair play to the Lions, they deserve to be in the finals. Go Canes!

There's no more in that than when you tackle someone hard and they fall badly.

Cane would be the first in line to say there was nothing in it and Perenara wouldn't deserve sanction for it.

Yeah the BS from Smithy on the sideline gives the air of double-standards which is shit.

Lucky to not be called up on it in the game for sure - but doesn't deserve a post-match citing is all I'm saying.

All Blacks squad announcement at 10:30, any players you guys feel should be picked/dropped?

Think Luatua should be called into the squad - had a massive season for the Blues, would drop Squire.

I want to see McKenzie in the squad, doubt he'd make it though - personally I'd bring him in in place of Sopoaga or even Cruden. Barrett deserves to be the starting 10 after his performances this season.

Anton Lienert-Brown looks like a good prospect at centre for a bolter.

Despite his performances I honestly can't see Barrett starting. Not because he doesn't deserve it but he's basically permanently pegged as a a super sub.
