Hammet might go better at the Highlanders as they have a bit more of his temperament - the Canes were always going to be too "up in the air" for him

John Plummtree's point of view regarding why the kiwi teams are playing better than their SA and AU counterparts.

Interesting last round we're in for.

Any one of the Chiefs/Highlanders/Crusaders/Hurricanes could finish on top of the NZ conference depending on the results from the weekend.

Waratahs will be fighting for their playoff spot tonight. If they can beat the Blues and the Brumbies lose against the Force (or if the Waratahs can get a bonus point win and the Brumbies can't) then they'll go the playoffs.

Stormers and Lions are cemented as conference leaders. Sharks are likely to be the third team, provided they can get beat the Sunwolves.

The Lions have the Jaguares this weekend. If they can win that game then they'll have 1st position overall meaning home advantage throughout the playoffs. (there is still a possibility that the Chiefs could finish 1st overall if the Lions don't pick up a bonus point win but that'll require a huge win over the Highlanders by the Chiefs)

If the Lions lose to the Jaguraes then it's likely that the NZ conference winner will be 1st overall (though if the Highlanders or Hurricanes win the conference then a losing bonus point will be all the Lions need to secure the #1 spot unless the Highlanders/Hurricanes win big)

Whoever gets that #1 spot, their opponent in the Quarterfinals will likely be the Sharks (unless the Bulls sneak in ahead).

From there it gets murky. The Brumbies (possibly Waratahs) will host the second placed team in the NZ conference. The lowest seeded NZ team will likely play their Quarter-Final in NZ. The remaining NZ team will go off to play the Stormers. (Assuming Lions finish #1 overall, if they don't then both teams finishing #2 and #3 in NZ will go to South Africa.

Should be interesting to see where everything lies after the weekend.

Actually, just read that the Lions coach is playing his B team on WNWIM this weekend. TAB has Jaguares as strong favourites. So it's likely the NZ conference winner will finish #1 overall. and the 3rd and 4th seeded NZ teams go off to South Africa to play the Stormers and Lions respectively. The NZ Conference winner will play the Sharks while the Brumbies will host the 2nd seeded NZ side.

A possible improvement with how Quarterfinal places are awarded?

How about limiting the guaranteed home spots to one team from Australia-New Zealand and South Africa. The other conference winners still get a guaranteed spot in the playoffs.

If we take the table as it stands now then new seedings will be.

Lions
Chiefs
Crusaders
Highlanders
Hurricanes
Stormers
Brumbies
Sharks

Lions vs Sharks
Chiefs vs Brumbies
Crusaders vs Stormers
Highlanders vs Hurricanes

Seems a bit fairer to me.

I changed my superbru prediction when I read that. I don't think the Lions have the firepower to win a final in New Zealand if they end up being number 2 in the regular season, so it smells like Ackerman does not believe in his team to go all the way and tries to get them as high as possible in the playoffs.

We could make it even fairer. Let the Lions play the Blues, Hurricanes, Chiefs, Crusaders and Highlanders twice whereas the Blues play the Kings, The Sunwolves, the Cheetahs.... home and away. And by virtue of the Blues playing those teams, let them have a guaranteed home spot for the Quarter Final.

I'm not a fan of the conference system but I think when you start expanding the competition to five different countries across a variety of timezones then a conference system is inevitable.

Too much stuff to balance before completion integrity!

Sharks beat Sunwolves so they're guaranteed to face whoever ends up #1 overall. Brumbies just need to lose by less than 7 against the Force to win the Aussie conference.

Crusaders near unbeatable against overseas teams (and the Blues) but have a shocking record against Canes/Chiefs/Clan.

Great opportunity for the Highlanders! Bonus point win gives them the NZ conference and possibly the #1 overall spot. A win by more than 7 gets them second in NZ and a trip to Australia rather than South Africa.

Minute 30. The defense by The Chiefs weathers wave after wave after wave and finally Naholo finds the smallest of holes to score in the corner. How good are both the Highlanders and the Chiefs?

Bloody commentators. It's 3 tries to 2. Bonus point isn't in play.

Another contender for match of the season!

So Canes manage to finish top of NZ conference? Impressive considering they got humped by 50 points by the Brumbies in the first round.

The Hurricanes and Crusaders will be in for a rematch if the Lions win tomorrow. Highlanders off to Aussie. Chiefs off to Cape Town.

Of course, if the Lions lose. Hurricanes will host the Sharks and the Crusaders will go to Johannesburg. Then hopefully, in that situation the NZ teams perform a clean sweep and we're left with only kiwi teams.

In that situation the semi finals will be a repeat of this round. Hurricanes vs Crusaders (but in Wellington) and Highlanders vs Chiefs.

Most notably the Hurricanes have managed to be top seed going in the playoffs for the second year in a row.... Does it means we are bound to another Hur-High final?

TAB has Hurricanes/Lions as their pick for the finalists for a $5 return. Hurricanes/Highlanders at $5.50

Hurricanes/Stormers third at $8.50? Stormers are guaranteed to play the semi in South Africa if they beat the Chiefs so I guess they take that into account. Interesting though, they've got the Chiefs favourite to beat the Stormers.

Who would've honestly picked the Canes to top the table at the end of the regular season?

Losing Nonu/Smith and not really having a midfield to replace them, then losing Milner-Skudder...then the shocking form of the likes of Jane and Barrett...

Good luck to them, hope they can go one step further this time.

While it is true they have lost a great deal of firepower, the likes of Cory Jane, Julian Savea, Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara have stayed.

And Proctor has always been a quality player.

For me the real standouts this season for the Canes are the Tight Five. Especially the locks.

Totally.

Who'd have thought that the strength of a Canes team is their tight 5? Very Happy

How about them Landers? 1 down 3 to go.

Hope Fekitoa is dropped from the All Blacks, terrible performance and hugely overrated in general.
