US PRO Rugby

Post by Bren on Mon Apr 18, 2016 10:30 am

Thought this was interesting -- it's the first day of US PRO Rugby today -- a professional rugby tournament in the States.

Some background: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/apr/16/doug-schoninger-us-pro-rugby

There's five teams in all, Denver, Ohio, Sacramento, San Francisco, and San Diego. Mils Muliaina has signed up for the San Francisco team -- though doesn't seem to be playing in their opening game today.

Here's a picture from Denver today: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CgRjlO-UUAEfqHz.jpg

So, does anyone think this has the potential to turn into something big? While I'm sure it won't reach MLS heights of popularity (let alone NBA/NHL/MLB/NFL heights), it could make being a rugby player a viable career in the United States.

Hopefully Dwayne Johnson's comment about rugby being the toughest game he's ever played will boost the game's uptake too

I hope so. Rugby is certainly popular at universities there even if it is more a drinking club that play rugby and go on tours to neighbouring states over the weekend. Although that is influenced by my friend who went to and played for one of the biggest party schools in America - U Florida.

Jamie Mackintosh is playing for Ohio so they are now my team! I heard rumours they will be adding Canadian teams next season which would be awesome for me. 1 would likely be in Vancouver and I will be living pretty close to there at the time.
